Albanian Airlines was founded in 1992 as a USD 2.0 million joint venture between Albania's state tourism agency Albtransport and Austria's Tyrolean Airways.
Both companies owned a 50% stake in the airline, which went bankrupt in July 1994.
In January 1995, Albanian Airlines was bought for USD 2.0 million by a unit of Kuwaiti Al Kharafi Group, which paid off all the company's previous debts.
The buyer, Amsterdam-based Aviation World MAK B.V. promised to bring in a new fleet of Fokker and Boeing jets and employ the entire former staff of 60.
Albanian Airlines operates its own fleet of aircrafts flying regularly to nine destinations in Europe and Northern Africa.
February 2009, Albanian Advanced Construction Group acquired 100% stake in the company from Kuwait-based Al-Kharafi & Sons Company for an undisclosed amount.
In August 2009, Azerbaijan`s Evsen Group of Companies acquired 93% stake in Albanian Airlines.
Albanian Airlines has 3,000 annual scheduled flights and serves more than 200,000 passengers per year.
