Intesa Sanpaolo Banka d.d. Bosna i Hercegovina was founded in 1972 under the name UPI banka d.d. Sarajevo. It initially operated as an internal bank of the UPI corporate system, which was one of the leading agricultural conglomerates in Bosnia and Herzegovina. In December 1990, UPI banka d.d. Sarajevo became a shareholding company, with a 92% state-owned stake. The bank transformed into a private limited company in 2000. In December 2005, Italy's Intesa Sanpaolo Holding International S.A. acquired a 35.02% stake in UPI Banka d.d. Sarajevo for EUR 17.4 million. In February 2006 the Italian bank group acquired another 45.93% of the Bosnian bank for EUR 37.4 million after a buyout offer for outstanding shares. Intesa Sanpaolo Holding operates in 40 countries worldwide, 13 of which are in Central and Eastern Europe and the Mediterranean pool. In July 2007 LT Gospodarska banka d.d. Sarajevo, another subsidiary of Intesa Sanpaolo Holding, merged into UPI Banka d.d. Sarajevo. On 20 August 2008 UPI Banka d.d. changed its name into Intesa Sanpaolo Banka d.d. Bosna i Hercegovina in accordance with a re-branding program of its majority owner. The Upi Banka joined the Society for Worldwide Interbank Financial Telecommunication (SWIFT) in 1997, and has been a member of the Western Union network since 2002. Intesa Sanpaolo Banka Bosna i Hercegovina provides services to almost 125,000 clients through a network of over 50 branches. Its range of services is focused on corporate and retail banking.
