Bulgarian firm Agria, which was established in 1932, is an agribusiness that is involved in the discovery, development, manufacture and marketing of a range of products designed to improve crop yields. The company, based in the country's second largest city Plovdiv, is primarily engaged in the development and sales of crop protection chemicals as herbicides, insecticides and fungicides to control weeds, insect pests and diseases in crops.
During communism, the firm was the largest manufacturer of pesticides on the Balkans. In March 1998, Bulgaria's Industry Ministry sold 53% of Agria to the company's employees and management for USD 4.55 million. The buyout firm, Agromanagement AD, had to pay 10% of the price immediately in cash and the rest in the next 10 years with one year grace period. The buyer also pledged to invest USD 3.72 million in the company over the next six years.
The company exports its products to a range of countries in Europe, Asia, South America, Africa and Middle East.
