Electrodistribution Grid West EAD, formerly CEZ Distribution Bulgaria, was established in 2000 after retail sales of electricity were spun off the country's power export monopoly National Electric Company (NEC).
Its core business consists of the operation, maintenance and development of the power distribution network and distribution of electric power in the capital Sofia, Sofia region, Blagoevgrad, Kyustendil, Pernik, Pleven, Lovech, Montana, Vratsa, Vidin.
In November 2004, Czech Republic's state-run utility CEZ signed a deal to buy 67% in the electricity distributors serving the Sofia capital, the region of Sofia and Pleven. In November 2007, CEZ merged its three regional grids into a single entity. Under the move, Elektrorazpredelenie Stolichno covered all duties and responsibilities of the other two – Elektrorazpredelenie Sofia Oblast and Pleven, and was renamed CEZ Distribution Bulgaria as of Jan 1, 2008. In October 2012 the Bulgarian privatization agency offered for sale its 33% skates in electricity distribution companies CEZ Electro Bulgaria and CEZ Distribution Bulgaria.
