Bulgaria's fuel retailer Petrol, which was established in 1932, is the country's former state petroleum product distribution monopoly. Today, the main activity of the company and its subsidiaries is wholesale and retail distribution of petroleum products. The group is also active in providing transportation services.
In 1999, Bulgaria sold 51% of Petrol for USD 52 million to International Consortium Bulgaria, which included Naftex Bulgaria Holding, OMV Austria and Petrol Holding Group. Later, local private Naftex Bulgaria Holding acquired the stakes of the other owners in the consortium. Naftex was renamed into Petrol Holding in 2003.
Petrol sold its stakes in eight subsidiaries to majority owner Petrol Holding for BGN 26.6 million (EUR 13.6 million). In April 2008 Petrol sold one of its oil units and 75 gas stations to Lukoil for the amount of over BGN 463 million.
At end-2013 the group operated 14 petrol terminals with a total storage capacity of 795,000 cubic meters and more than 330 gas stations across the country.
