A predecessor of Pirogov Hospital was Red Cross Hospital, founded in 1900. In 1951 the emergency hospital Pirogov was set up. Pirogov hospital is a multiprofile hospital for active medical treatment and emergency medicine. Since 2001 it is also a university hospital. Pirogov is a principal partner of the Sofia Health Insurance Fund, as well. It employs more than 2000 specialists and is also a place for scientific researches, having more than 160 scientists.
