Optela AD was established in 1980 as a state-owned research and production enterprise for industrial CO2 lasers sources and laser systems. Another item of the company product list is the metal cutting machinery.
In 1997 the company was privatized and currently it is a listed company with 100% private capital.
In 2010 six machine building companies - Unimash Industries, Corporation Unimash, ZMM-Metalik, Noreks-1, Laser and Optical Technologies-2000 and Metalik-Privat merged into Optela AD.
The company operates two manufacturing facilities - one located in the town of Plovdiv (22,200 square meters) and one in Pazardzhik (22,600 square meters). The laser system manufacturer distributes its products in Bulgaria, Germany, Italy and Russia.
