Bulgarian steel plant Promet Steel, which was put into operation in 1988, is one of the biggest steel producers in the country. The company's product range features hot rolled steel bars for reinforcement of concrete, hot rolled equal leg angle steel bars, hot rolled round steel bars and hot rolled flat steel bars. The production process is organized into two divisions - rolling mill and cut and bend shop.
In January 1999, Bulgaria's Privatisation Agency sold a 77% stake in Promet to the local Neva Holding for USD 1.03 million. Neva Holding was set by a Cyprus-registered company and several Bulgarian and Russian firms, which trade in metals. The buyer pledged to invest USD 8.0 million in a five-year period and settle Promet's outstanding debt of over USD 13.66 million to banks and suppliers. In May 2002, Promet was merged with a Russian-controlled company Neva OOD and later the two companies are transformed into Promet Steel. In May 2009, the subsidiaries Promet Trade and Promet Inter Trade merged into Promet Steel.
