Sofia Princess Hotel, which was constructed in 1977, is one of the largest hotels on the Balkans. The four-star facility, previously named Novotel Evropa, offers 569 single and double rooms and 14 apartments. It also features a lobby bar, restaurants, an indoor swimming pool, a business centre, a beauty salon, a fitness centre, Princess Corecom shops, a car parking lot and three conference halls. The hotel, whose casino is reportedly the biggest on the Balkans, reports a 60% occupancy rate, with around 100,000 registered overnights.
In May 1998, Bulgaria's Privatisation Agency sold the hotel to Turkish investor Sudi Ozkan, owner of the Princess hotel chain, for USD 12 million and investment pledges of USD 4.0 million. The new owner also owns the Corecom chain of shops in Bulgaria and is a big player on the local gambling market via his company Aktiv BG. In 1998, Sudi Ozkan also acquired the Plovdiv-based Interhotel Trimontsium for USD 3.15 million, pledging to invest an additional USD 3.5 million in it.
