Cosan is one of the world's largest producers of sugar and ethanol. The company cultivates, harvests and processes sugarcane, the main raw material used to produce sugar and ethanol. Cosan has 17 mills, 2 sugar refineries and 2 port terminals operated by the company and by its subsidiaries Usina Da Barra S.A. Açúcar e Àlcool and FBA. Cosan's sugar exports are principally handled by its subsidiary Cosan Operadora Portuária S.A., or Cosan Portuária, which operates port and warehouse facilities at the Port of Santos in the state of São Paulo. Since February 2000, when the shareholders approved an increase in the share capital of Irmãos Franceschi Agrícola Industrial e Comercial Ltda., the predecessor company, in exchange for the contribution to the company of the Costa Pinto, Santa Helena, São Francisco and Tamandupá mills, Cosan has expanded its operations primarily through acquisitions, partnerships and corporate restructuring.
