Gerdau started it's operations as a nails factory and other activities not related to siderurgy. In 1946, under Curt Johannpeter's management, the company started to expand it's business. In the 80's decade, Gerdau began it's internationalization, acquiring Siderúrgica Laisa, in Uruguay. In 1989, Gerdau bought the first mill in North America - Courtice Steel, in Canada. After the year 2000, the national and international acquisitions became more frequent and today Gerdau is the largest producer of long steel in the Americas, with mills in Brazil, Argentina, Canada, Chile, Colombia, the United States and Uruguay.
