Autopista Central was part of the First Urban Concessions Program, promoted by the Ministry of Public Works in 1995. Autopista Central crosses the Metropolitan Region from the north to the south, through its two Axes: North - South and General Velasquez. In July 2001, the first stone of this massive construction work was laid, and in December 2004, it began its operation, becoming the first urban freeway to receive a concession in the Metropolitan Region. With this latest milestone, Chile was the leader in Latin America when it began to operate the unprecedented free-flow electronic toll system. Four months later, the country became a pioneer worldwide, applying this system in an inter-operable way. On May 8, 2006, the last outstanding sections of the General Velasquez Axis were inaugurated, and with it, Autopista Central was authorized to operate in all its extension.
