Distribuidora Toyota S.A.S. is the dealer of the TOYOTA network and distributor of industrial equipment. In 1959, the first TOYOTA vehicles arrived in Colombia, exactly five years after Yukio Tanaka, an executive of the firm, arrived in Bogota to extend the exports that the Japanese company had started with Pakistan. In September 1967, the first TOYOTA Land Cruiser trucks were imported and it was incorporated as a concessionaire for Colombia of TOYOTA Motor Corporation, with the name of Distribuidora Toyota de Colombia Ltda. In July of 1970, the company decided to change the name to Distribuidora Toyota Ltda, in order to import, represent and distribute vehicles and forklifts in Colombia. In 1987 the National Government authorized the three national assemblers to manufacture campers, in the year of 1989 Sofasa signed an agreement of intent with Toyota Motor Corporation to initiate feasibility studies. Toyota Motor Corporation purchased 23% of Sofasa's shares, of which 7.5 are from Mitsui y Cia., a Financial Holding of Toyota Motor Corporation. The final agreements were sealed on May 17, 1990, these agreements are license and technical assistance for Sofasa. In the year of 1992, the first Toyotas assembled in Colombia were made with the Land Cruiser trucks and a year later with the Hilux trucks. Today, more than 60,000 vehicles sold by Distoyota and more than 50,000 vehicles assembled by Sofasa are circulate accross the country.
