It was founded by Don José de Garavilla y Quintana in 1887 in Elantxobe, establishing the foundations of one of the largest European groups in extractive fishing and canned fish. In the following years, the business experienced significant growth, and in 1917, "La Equitativa" factory was founded, which would be considered one of the best and most modern canning factories in Europe. The company faced challenges during the war and post-war period, leading Don Estanislao Garavilla Landeta to seek opportunities abroad. There, he gained valuable experience and knowledge that allowed him to gradually revive the company upon his return to his homeland. In the 1960s, the Isabel brand emerged, establishing up to 11 factories throughout the Iberian Peninsula and the Canary Islands under the principle of "canning where there is fish." With a strong commercial network, active presence in the media, and a modern fishing fleet, the company thrived in the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s under the leadership of the third generation of the family. During this period, the company consolidated its structure and image, gaining a solid reputation. Isabel became the first brand in the canning sector with a significant media presence, and its slogan "¡Qué bien, hoy comemos con Isabel!" became a joyful expression associated with the satisfaction of enjoying their products.
