The Empresa Nacional de Energía Eléctrica (ENEE) is an autonomous organization established by the Military Government Board through Decree Law Number 48 on February 20, 1957. It is a public service entity with legal personality, its own assets, and indefinite duration. ENEE is responsible for the development and construction of electrification facilities, as well as the production, transmission, and distribution of electrical energy in the country. Currently, the company employs approximately 4,725 employees, making it one of the major sources of employment in the country. Prior to the formation of ENEE, each city in the country was served in an isolated manner by small generating units, mostly powered by diesel engines, owned by municipalities, development boards, the state, or private companies. The creation of ENEE aimed to achieve national electrification based on the rational use of the country's natural resources, taking advantage of economies of scale. The first major project undertaken by ENEE was the Cañaveral Hydroelectric Plant, which involved the development of the Yojoa Lake and Río Lindo's potential. This project included the construction of high-voltage transmission lines and substations necessary to connect this plant with the country's main demand centers. This marked the beginning of what is now the national Interconnected System, a network of electrical transmission that covers the country's main regions, connecting generating plants and different consumption centers.
