The Kerala State Electricity Board Limited is a company located in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala. It was incorporated under the Companies Act, 1956 on January 14, 2011, and started operations as an independent company on November 1, 2013. The company is the successor entity of the Kerala State Electricity Board, which was constituted by the Government of Kerala in 1957 under the Electricity (Supply) Act, 1948. Its main purpose is to carry out the business of Generation, Transmission, and Distribution of electricity in the state of Kerala. The Board has grown over the years, with an installed capacity of 2823 MW and transmission and distribution networks of over 10404 and 272480 circuit kilometers respectively. It serves over 1 crore consumers in both urban and rural areas of the state. The company has faced challenges in meeting the increasing demand for electricity, particularly during peak periods, and has had to rely on purchasing thermal energy from outside the state. The Board has historically supplied electricity at the lowest price in the country and has incurred heavy borrowings to meet expenses. The State Commission now requires the company to operate strictly on commercial considerations.
