Kencana Petroleum Berhad (KENCANA) operate as an investment holding company. The principal activities of the subsidiaries are integrated engineering and fabrication of oil and gas production facilities and drilling rigs, specialised fabrication and infrastructure construction and property investment. Kencana Petroleum Bhd's history can be traced back to 1982 when the company was known as Hin Loon Engineering (M) Sdn Bhd. (HLE). The company started out as a resident contractor for major fabrication yards in Malaysia supplying skilled and unskilled manpower. The group is also a total turnkey contractor for engineering and fabrication of production facilities, modules and process skid systems for the oil and gas industry. Its subsidiaries include Kencana HL Sdn. Bhd., Kencana Marine Sdn. Bhd., Kencana Metering Sdn. Bhd., Kencana Infrastructure Sdn. Bhd. and Kencana Steelworks Sdn. Bhd., among others. The principal activities of the subsidiaries include integrated engineering and fabrication of oil and gas production facilities and drilling rigs; operation and management of fabrication yard; metering works, process skid systems and pipeline construction, and property investment. The Group mainly operates in Malaysia and the Malaysia - Thailand Joint Development Area (MTJDA). On September 5, 2007, the Company acquired Kencana Petroleum Ventures Sdn. Bhd. Kencana Petroleum was established from years of excellent track records of its two major subsidiaries, Kencana HL and Kencana Bestwide. Kencana HL, formerly known as HL Engineering, was established in 1982 as a Resident contractor for major fabrication yards in Malaysia. Founded by Chong Hin Loon, HL Engineering began operating its Lumut Fabrication Yard in 2000. In 2001, Kencana HL was awarded a Major Fabrication (Offshore Structures) license by Petronas which allows the Group to undertake the fabrication of major offshore platforms, such as production platforms. The founders of Best Wide Matrix, Cher Lee Kiat, and Tan Siew Lee who joined the company in 1996, are the key personnel who played an important role in the successful development of the company. In 2005, Kencana HL and Kencana Bestwide have amalgamated to form the Kencana Petroleum Group. Datuk Mokhzani Matahir is the company's executive chairman while Chong Hin Loon, who founded HLE, is deputy executive chairman. The company is one of the seven operators licensed by the national oil company Petronas to provide major fabrication works for the industry. The company was incorporated in 1982 and is based in Kuala Lumpur.
