PKP Intercity S.A. is the largest Polish railway operator based in Warsaw. The company connects major city centers and popular tourist destinations within the country, as well as provides convenient travel options throughout Europe. On a daily basis, PKP Intercity operates approximately 400 trains. In 2015, the company completed an investment program worth nearly 5.5 billion PLN in rolling stock. As part of these projects, new trains such as Pendolino, FLIRT3, and PesaDART were purchased. In September 2016, PKP Intercity prepared a new rolling stock strategy for the years 2016-2020, with planned investments of around 2.5 billion PLN in rolling stock and technical facilities. In December 2017, an updated version of the strategy was adopted, extending its perspective until 2023. The total expenditure for its implementation will exceed 7 billion PLN. Under the rolling stock strategy "PKP Intercity - Kolej Dużych Inwestycji" (PKP Intercity - Railway of Major Investments), the company will purchase and modernize wagons, locomotives, multiple units, and rebuild parking stations. After the completion of the largest investment program in the company's history, nearly 80% of the trains will consist of new or modernized rolling stock. Additionally, around 80% of the passenger rolling stock will be equipped with electrical sockets, 94% will have air conditioning, and at least 77% will offer wireless internet access. Furthermore, each train will have wheelchair-accessible space and bicycle storage. By 2023, PKP Intercity plans to modernize over 700 wagons and purchase 185 new ones. These will include compartment and open-plan vehicles, 1st and 2nd class, dining cars, as well as wagons for bicycle transportation and multifunctional COMBI wagons. Passengers will also benefit from 12 new and 14 modernized electric multiple units. PKP Intercity will also acquire 118 electric (single and multi-system) and diesel locomotives, as well as modernize nearly 200 electric and diesel locomotives (EU/EP07, EP08, and SM42). Some locomotives, wagons, and multiple units will be adapted for speeds of up to 200 km/h. The strategy also includes the modernization of parking stations. In 2018, PKP Intercity served over 46.1 million passengers, representing an almost 8% increase compared to 2017 when the company served 42.8 million passengers. In 2017, there was an increase of 4.3 million passengers compared to 2016, when PKP Intercity served 38.5 million passengers. In 2019, the company served nearly 49 million passengers, indicating a growth of almost 57% compared to 2015.
