In 1879, Johann Michael Hess set up a small smithy workshop, where scales and precision instruments were manufactured and repaired. 1896 is considered the year the present SC BALANTA SA came into being. That year, the former workshop became The Hess Scales Factory, owned by Ludwig Hess. After his death, tradition was continued by his son, Victor Hess. On October 15, 1910 the factory appears for the first time in the documents of the time as "Prima Fabrică de Cântare Victor Hess" in Romania.
Between 1935-1936 the construction of a new factory on the nowadays site began. In 1937, the company was reorganized by capitalization becoming "Uzinele HESS" Sibiu. In this period it produced scale equipment, food industry machinery, refrigeratory equipment and welded construction. In 1947 the nationalization of the company takes place by entering the property of the state. The name of the company is changed to "Uzina BALANŢA" Sibiu.
"Uzina BALANŢA" Sibiu became the main producer of weighing equipment in the former CAER. Starting with 1971, the state decided the expansion of the production capacities and started the construction of the hydraulic equipment section, BALANŢA II. This section undertook its activity in a separate location and produced pneumatic and hydraulic elements on order.
In 1990, SC BALANTA SA is set up. In 1996, the General Shareholders Meeting decided the privatization of the company by listing the shares belonging to the State Property Fund on RASDAQ.
