Sberbank d.d. was founded under the name Banka Volksbank d.d. in 1993 and it was majority-owned by Vienna-based Volksbank International AG. In 2013 the lender was fully acquired by Sberbank Europe AG, which is owned by Russia's Sberbank. The Russian banking group operates in the CEE region, Russia and the CIS countries, serving over 100 million customers. Its subsidiary Sberbank Europe AG manages a network of nine universal banks in eight countries of Central and Eastern Europe, including Slovakia, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Serbia and Ukraine. The Slovenian lender operates a network of branch offices in eight Slovenian cities.
