Universidad de la Republica (Uruguay)

The Universidad de la República is the largest public university in Uruguay. It was founded on July 18, 1849, in Montevideo and currently has a presence in 14 departments of the country. The university has over 135,000 undergraduate students, according to data from the continuous student survey in 2018. Its first rector was Lorenzo Fernández, and its current rector since 2018 is economist Rodrigo Arim. The Universidad de la República is an autonomous entity, as established in the Constitution of the Republic. It is characterized by co-governance, which means the participation of all university members (students, graduates, and teachers) in the decision-making processes that affect the institution, in accordance with the Organic Law of the University approved in 1958.
