The Sugar Factory Sajkaska from Zabalj was founded in 1976. It is located 25 km from Novi Sad.It is on the same distance from the nearest river port on Dunav.
Its optimum processing capacity is 4,000 tons of sugar beet and 500 tons of raw sugar per day. Sajkaska achieved $7 milliom revenue from exports in 2002.
The Greek Hellenic Sugar bought the Serbian factory, located in Zabalj for 1.1 mln euro ($1.4 mln) in 2002.
Hellenic Sugar Industries has revealed plans to invest 5m euros in 2004 to purchase new equipment for Sajkaska, twice more than stipulated in the takeover contract. Having being acquired Sajkaska, Hellenic Sugar now own the 40% of the sugar industry in Serbia.
