Continental Banka was established in 1991 as a regional bank operating mainly in the Vojvodina region as well as the capital Belgrade.
Continental was one of 16 Serbian banks in which the state acquired a large stake in the summer of 2002 when the central bank decided to swap their debts to foreign sovereign and commercial lenders into state-held equity.
The bank had to issue 250,549 shares at a face value of CSD 10,000, which allowed the state to get an 85.06% stake.
Slovenia's Nova Ljubljanska Banka (NLB), which bought a third of the bank's equity in the spring of 2002, saw its stake declining.
The Serbian government opened a sale procedure for Continental Banka in September 2004.
In July 2005, Nova Ljubljanska Banka (NLB), Slovenia's largest bank, signed a deal with authorities in Belgrade to buy a 98.97% stake in Continental Bank for EUR 49.5 million.
In January 2009, NLB Continental Banka and NLB LHB Banka merged under the NLB Banka name.
The lender operates through a network of more than 80 organizational units.
