Colombia is the fourth largest economy in Latin America in terms of nominal GDP, and the third largest in the region by population, with 50.4mn people as of December 2019. During 2014-2019, the wholesale, retail and repair sector performed well, with its gross value added (GVA) expanding at a CAGR of 3.2%, slightly above average GDP growth over the same period (2.4%) and reaching an 8.9% share of the country’s GDP in 2019. Trade activity remains concentrated in supermarkets, which accounted for 56.9% of total retail sales in 2019, followed by specialist stores (26.4%), shopping centres (14.7%) and online retail (2.1%), according to EMIS Insights estimates. In line with global trends, online retail was the fastest-growing channel during 2014-2019, expanding its sales by 2.2 times in real terms during that period.
